Description

Josha Schaback: "The Monkey of Karlsruhe"
Karlsruhe 1848: Inventor and former revolutionary Carl von Sauerbronn returns from an expedition in Brazil – with a singing monkey. During the days of the Baden Revolution, the monkey Julius becomes a symbol of freedom, reason, and contradiction. While Sauerbronn tries to train the animal, his daughter Susanne teaches it to speak – and to love. Soon, events escalate: revolutionaries, court officials, and an enthusiastic audience become captivated by this unusual trio story. Joscha Schaback tells with wit, linguistic finesse, and a sense for the grotesque about the search for freedom and equality, the intoxication of ideas, and the power of imagination – a literary fun in the spirit of E. T. A. Hoffmann and simultaneously a clever commentary on our present. Joscha Schaback studied German studies, theater and music science, as well as directing. He writes and translates opera librettos and texts for children's concerts. He is the author of the non-fiction book "Children's Music Theater in Germany" and also publishes critiques, essays, and short stories in newspapers, specialist magazines, and anthologies. His stories "The Machine" and "Over the River," illustrated by Marek Walczak, were published by Brot&Kunst Verlag. "The Monkey of Karlsruhe" is his first novel. Chrissy Em Rose: "The Legend of the Raven King"
"Little girl, beware. The black raven watches over you. It is always there when you call it, but it gets angry if you seek it. Little boy, be careful. The black raven flies at night. It always has a watchful eye on you, but don’t look for it, or it will punish you."
They said our village was too small to fall victim to the Tocer invasion. They were wrong. The insect-like beings have nested within our walls. When winter is over, our supplies will be gone, and our houses will be mere ruins. If any of us survives, it would be a miracle.
Our only hope is the Raven King – a legend, a whisper in the dark. No one has found him yet. But I, who do not believe in him, am supposed to find him.
But what if he doesn’t exist?
"Even if I am one of the ravens, I cannot bring you to him." He sounded desperate, almost helpless. "It’s impossible!" His warm breath brushed my cold skin, giving me goosebumps. Chrissy Em Rose has been enchanting her readers with fantastic worlds full of magic and adventure for over ten years. Her first publication in 2012 was inspired by her idea to leave something special for her children. Writing is her escape from the stressful everyday life. Odine Raven: "The House on Hollerheide"
Cleo, in her early 40s and recently single, is the sole heir of a Jugendstil villa in the countryside. After breaking up with her fiancé, she dares to start anew and moves into her late Aunt Henriette’s house, where she spent many wonderful school holidays as a child. But she quickly realizes: the estate in the countryside is anything but ordinary. When suddenly fantastic, non-human beings appear – such as cheeky water spirits, nymphs, and a faun in the sprawling garden – Cleo is rudely reminded! As she faces new and old friends, she must learn to live with these strange creatures, help a Syrian refugee family get started, and finally get rid of her cunning ex.
Christian Metzger reads from "Humorous Late Harvest"
Reading late is fine, but here it’s about delicious wine. Feel free to browse, this little book could be something for you. But please pay attention to the wine label… pardon… package insert: The stories may contain traces of humor and fantasy. For side effects like smilenitis or recurring bouts of laughter, contact the publishers. Instructions for use… pardon… instructions for use: Take a bottle of wine of your choice, open it, and pour yourself a glass. Then open the book and start reading. Take sips of wine intermittently. Allow your mouth corners to lift. If needed, open another bottle of wine and read the book with a lasting smile until the cork speaks to you. And you will understand this hint with the vine if you have finished reading the book.
Christian Metzger and Odine Raven form the author collective "Vernes Federn".
