Description

The viola da gamba, a predecessor of the modern cello, was one of the most important instruments of the Baroque era. It existed in countless forms and sizes. It appeared not only as an accompanying instrument but also as a highly virtuosic soloist. The Baroque ensemble Lusingando places the viola da gamba at the center of the last "Sunday at 5" concert of the season. Works by Antonio Bertali and Johann Heinrich Schmelzer will be performed, two composers who dominated the musical scene in the Habsburg Empire and brought Italian flair to the Vienna court. Schmelzer's works also served as an inspiration for Dietrich Buxtehude, who established the "stylus phantasticus" in Lübeck, a particularly dramatic and improvisational style of playing.
