Olivier Mosset pursues a quest for formal rigor and an exploration of the very foundations of painting. His approach is direct and obvious, eliminating all figuration, subjectivity, symbolism, or metaphor. His work, both rooted in and breaking away from the dialectical history of painting, questions notions of originality and artistic paternity. Associated with conceptual abstraction, his works are characterized by pure colors and shapes, inviting a physical and immersive experience of the surface, scale, and pattern. Since then, Mosset has continued to explore the possibilities of painting, notably focusing on metallic surfaces. His recent works on aluminum panels demonstrate a deepening of his research on color, light, and perception. The use of chameleon paint, which changes hue depending on the viewing angle and lighting, gives these pieces a moving and elusive character. At the crossroads of monochrome and kinetic art, these works question the materiality of painting and its ability to evolve with its environment. Inspired by industrial techniques, Mosset entrusts their production to processes similar to those of automotive painting, thus reinforcing his approach of neutrality and distancing from the artistic gesture. Olivier Mosset was born in 1944 in Bern, Switzerland. He lives and works in Tucson, United States.
