In the rainforests of Southeast Asia live some of the last hunter-gatherer societies on our planet. They have no leaders, no property, no gods, and neither past nor future. Social researcher Khaled Hakami learns their language and experiences a culture shock that could be more surprising, funnier, and more astonishing. Humans have spent 95 percent of their history as hunters and gatherers, but at the latest in two generations, this way of life will no longer exist. The stereotype of primitive Stone Age humans does not apply to them any more than the romantic idea of indigenous life in harmony with nature. Khaled Hakami, a macro-sociologist at the University of Vienna, won first prize with his lecture at the Discovery Days in Flims. He not only talks about hunters and gatherers but also humorously relates their everyday life and values to our Western society. Laughter and amazement are just as guaranteed as surprise and shock.
