"Nirgendland" - A literary-musical evening for Mascha Kaléko

Admission: 7:30 PM, Start: 8:00 PM In honor of the German-Jewish poet Mascha Kaléko, Etta Scollo and Maria Schrader, together with the Etta Scollo Trio, dedicate themselves to an extraordinary stage project between music, poetry, and remembrance. Under the title "Nirgendland," an evening is created that brings Kaléko's subtle melancholy, humor, and linguistic precision back to life.
Mascha Kaléko (1907–1975) was considered the voice of an entire generation. In the coffeehouses of Berlin in the 1930s, she became instantly famous with her "Lyrical Stenogrammheft" – her poems reflect the urban life feeling, sharp and tender at the same time. After fleeing from the Nazis, she lived in exile in New York and later in Jerusalem. Her texts tell of uprooting, belonging, and the search for home – themes that seem more relevant today than ever. "Wherever I travel, I go to Nirgendland," says one of her poems – a line that gives the evening its title.
The Italian-German musician Etta Scollo, known for her poetic compositions between chanson, world music, and classical, approaches Kaléko's poetry with sensitive musicality. Together with her trio – Susanne Paul (cello) and Tara Bouman (clarinet) – she develops a dense, emotional soundscape where words and music intertwine. Etta Scollo, born in Catania, is considered in Germany as the "Voice of Sicily." For her project "Canta Ro," she received several awards, including the World Music Prize RUTH. The singer, composer, and producer has released 19 albums so far and has been awarded two gold records. Besides engagements in opera and theater, she dedicates herself to the reinterpretation of traditional Sicilian music in collaboration with renowned orchestras. Her compositions combine music with literature and poetry, currently with the poetry of Mascha Kaléko. In June 2024, she was honored by Italy's President Sergio Mattarella with the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic at the rank of Officer. Maria Schrader, born in 1965, is an actress, screenwriter, and director. She has received numerous awards for her work, including the Max Ophüls Prize, the Hessian Film Award, the Bavarian, and the German Film Award, the Silver Bear at Berlinale, the German Audiobook Award, among others. She debuted as a film director in 2007 with "Liebesleben," and her second directorial work "Vor der Morgenröte" was awarded the Audience Award at the European Film Awards 2017 and was Austria's Oscar candidate in the category "Best Foreign Language Film." In 2020, she received an Emmy Primetime Award for Best Direction of a Miniseries for the Netflix miniseries "Unorthodox." In 2021, Maria Schrader's film "Ich bin dein Mensch" was released, and in 2022, "She Said" premiered at the New York Film Festival.
