The hiking day already begins with a pleasant touch of adventure, as we take the open wooden box train from Starkenbach, which saves us from climbing the first 600 meters of elevation. What an aerial adventure, yet very safe! We will be able to use this energy later on the rather steep path leading to the summit, which we do not need yet.
Arriving at the upper station, we marvel at the beautiful mountain flora of Toggenburg and the view of the jagged Churfirsten peaks motivates us even more. During the first quarter of an hour of walking, we take time to visit a prehistoric cave – the famous Wildmannlisloch – and discover the history of this magical place. A headlamp can be very useful for this brief visit.
The path leading to Frümsel, probably the steepest but not the longest summit of the Churfirsten, is initially very pleasant and runs without difficulty through lush alpine meadows and isolated pastures. But the last 300 meters of elevation on a narrow path leading to Frümsel are a real challenge – those who have always sought this kind of challenge will be fully rewarded. The path is nowhere dangerous in dry weather; a secured section with a metal cable helps us overcome an elevation. And the reward at the summit is simply breathtakingly beautiful. You will not soon forget this panoramic view. The descent is then made by the same path, just as entertaining – hiking poles are highly recommended for this route. This hike is certainly not long, but it is extremely exciting.
