When 12-year-old Emmi is awake at night in her grandparents' house, she hears a noise in the attic. What she finds there changes her summer forever: A dormouse has built a nest in an old oven – and right below it is her great-great-grandmother Elsa's diary. Fascinated, Emmi immerses herself in Elsa's world in 1930s Germany. She reads about a time when a wrong word could be deadly. And she learns that Elsa still found the courage to do the right thing. In her own everyday life, Emmi meets the neighbor girl Bianca and soon witnesses how Bianca and her brother are insulted by two boys. Emmi wants to confront the boys, but fear chokes her. Can Elsa's diary help Emmi find her own courage? Based on the true story of a family in the Nazi resistance, Stefanie Taschinski authentically and movingly combines historical history with today's questions about bullying, exclusion, and civil courage.
