Creating a Hero, subtitled Edvard Beneš as a Myth At the time of his death in early September 1948, Edvard Beneš was perceived as a hero by the vast majority of Czechoslovak society. Regardless of the complex political and cultural realities, without people considering his actual, not always successful life story, he represented for many of his fellow citizens nothing less than the embodiment of courage, freedom, democracy, historical justice, and historical satisfaction. The mythical Beneš far surpassed the real Beneš, into whose form a number of ideas, dreams, wishes, expectations, but also self-deceptions projected by Czechoslovak society in the first half of the 20th century were reflected, helping to shape it. The lecture will attempt to depict this multifaceted symbolic environment, its formation, forms, and significance through the mythical image of Edvard Beneš. Free entry. Advance reservation possible.
