Description

Giuseppe Verdi's "Don Carlo" combines political power struggles and unfulfilled passion into a monumental opera drama. The Spanish Infante Carlos loves the French princess Elisabetta. When his father, King Philip II, marries her for political reasons, Carlos finds himself in conflict with the ruler. Against the backdrop of the atrocities of the Spanish Inquisition and the freedom struggles in Flanders, Giuseppe Verdi created a work that is both moving and highly dramatic. Petr Popelka returns to the podium of the Zurich Opera Orchestra as one of the rising conductors of the younger generation. Lise Davidsen sings Elisabetta di Valois.
