The immortal intermezzo from Pietro Mascagni's one-act opera Cavalleria rusticana packs overwhelming emotion into a maximally condensed form. It is the soundtrack of longing in large-format opera cinema - it even makes the Godfather cry. Fabio di Càsola's clarinet moves almost weightlessly through the acrobatic-sensual spheres of Gaetano Donizetti's Concertino and Gioacchino Rossini's Introduzione, tema e variazioni. Speed, richness of sound, and seductive timing are the fixed stars in the universe of the Italian showpiece style. Antonín Dvořák's 8th Symphony is Bohemian joie de vivre in pure form. Wide landscapes, bird calls, dances, folk music, and great melodies merge into a big yes to life. Dolce vita is not just Italian. It is an attitude. Joy of life, passion, and love of sound.
