Description

There are 120 mountain passes in Switzerland, 20 are mountain passes, 10 are part of European routes. They have been important in all eras – as mule tracks for trade, as pilgrimage routes for salvation, as military roads for power. Picturesque pass roads serve tourism and underground rails serve globalized mass transport. Above all, the Alpine passes are the reason why Switzerland came into existence and survived all European crises. The course shows the pioneering achievements in development, the geostrategic and economic importance of the passes in the European context, and their symbolic power for the identity of Switzerland. Our speaker Dr. Helmut Stalder studied German studies, history, and political science in Zurich, Frankfurt, and New York and is the author of several non-fiction books on transport, economic, and technology history.
