The Religion of the Ancient Egyptians

Description

For the people of ancient Egypt, who were entirely dependent on the surrounding nature, it was imbued with higher powers to which they assigned corresponding deities very early on. Their religion was therefore characterized by polytheism, the belief in a multitude of divine beings with different attributes and areas of influence. This simultaneously reflected the complexity of creation in all its facets. Central to the development of their religious worldview were the course of the sun and the cycle of the Nile with its annual flooding, from which various creation myths developed. Humans saw themselves as part of an eternal cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, making the concept of the afterlife an important part of their religious thought. Earthly life was followed by an afterlife in the realm of the gods, described in different forms depending on the era. Preparation for this second life began during one's lifetime through the construction and decoration of a tomb.
Religion permeated the daily lives of people in the form of numerous cults and rituals for deities, kings, and private individuals, with the king acting as an intermediary between the human and divine worlds. Temples served as temporary dwellings for the gods on earth, many of which have been well preserved, especially those of Luxor and Karnak. As an integral part of culture, religious practices developed over more than three millennia and still provide us today with a fascinating insight into the thinking and beliefs of the people of that time through archaeological and textual evidence.
