Description
The wealthy entrepreneur Pacarel wants to buy fame and recognition by becoming a patron of art and culture. He plans to engage the tenor Dujeton, who everyone is talking about, at the local opera and asks his friend Dufausset for help. However, at the same time, Dufausset sends his son to study law in Paris and entrusts him to Pacarel's care. Pacarel, who only sees what he wants to see, mistakes the attractive student for Dujeton, and fate takes its course. When Pacarel begins to doubt the singing talent of the supposed star tenor, it is already too late... Absurd mix-ups, small white lies with big consequences, and all kinds of mishaps and blunders: these are the ingredients of a genuine theatrical farce from the kitchen of GEORGES FEYDEAU (1862–1921). As the most important comedy writer of the Belle Époque, he wrote 24 full-length plays and 21 one-act plays. With sharp wit and virtuoso skill, he exposed our weaknesses in all their variety in his comedies. In "The Cat in the Bag," a banal misunderstanding and a fixed idea plunge the characters into a whirlpool of love entanglements, mix-ups, mishaps, and embarrassments.
