Medieval castles are symbols of an entire era and are still present in our landscape today, whether in ruins or transformed in early modern times. The current structures already represent the peak and late flowering of a building style that has its origins in the Early Middle Ages. The lecture will introduce the beginnings of this distinctive architectural form. Who started building castles, when, where, and with what intentions? What did these early castles look like? Examples from all over Central Europe will be presented, especially structures in the area of present-day Switzerland.
