Description

Life has not always been gentle with Lena Brücker, indeed not. But there were moments of happiness she will never forget. When she is visited in old age by a writer in a nursing home who tells her he has always enjoyed the supposedly invented currywurst at her snack stand at Großneumarkt, she does not suspect that his questions will lead her on a journey of memories to the key moment of her life. Several decades earlier, in the last days of World War II, she encounters the young boatswain Hermann Bremer in a Hamburg cinema. Sudden air raid alarm drives both into an air raid shelter. Later, Lena invites him to her home, and Hermann decides to stay, which makes him a deserter. To avoid losing him again, Lena withholds the end of the war from Hermann. But how long can such a lie be maintained?
Uwe Timm describes in his famous novella the unlikely story of an unusual love in difficult times.
