Chinese Characters Through the Ages

Chinese writing is the only still-used writing system that does not primarily rely on the pronunciation of a language but carries meaning-indicating elements in the majority of its characters. There are several Chinese languages, but only one Chinese script. It is used daily by about one-sixth of humanity and is thus a central bearer of Chinese culture. But how many Chinese characters are there? And how did they originate? The speaker explains the historical development, the systematic structure, and the peculiarities of Chinese characters. Furthermore, he shows their interconnection with art, culture, customs, and everyday life. How does the survival of the characters change, and thus reading and writing, in relation to technical terms and values of modern times? What impact does the current development have on the characters? To experience the complexity of the characters and the technique, all participants are given the opportunity to try writing with brush and ink themselves.
