The Touring Theatre Innsbruck presents again in October 2026 the impressive spoken theatre piece "The Inaugural Address of the American Papess" by Esther Vilar. The work was created in the early 1980s amidst intense societal and church debates and is more relevant today than ever. In an alternative present, a woman – Papess Johanna II. – ascends the St. Peter's Chair for the first time. In her fictional televised speech, she talks about personal freedom, responsibility, and the mechanisms of human thinking and acting. The author provides a brutally honest mirror to freedom-loving men, emancipated women, opposition youth, and the church itself. Lisa Kröll takes on the role of the Papess, vividly demonstrating the inner logic and consistency of this extraordinary character. Production and direction: Franz Kaslatter.
