Description
The Alps are not only a geographical area characterized by distinctive geomorphology. They are also a cultural space shaped by diverse 'imaginary souvenirs': through 'narrative mementos' that soldiers, pilgrims, traders, and later tourists have carried in their minds since antiquity in the form of reports and stories from the Alps. These continue to influence our image of 'the Alps' today and often manifest in powerful clichés that direct our view of 'the Alps' and can lead to a distorted perception of reality and expectations. The dialogue aims to explore, through selected examples in the exhibition, how Alpine tourism has contributed to the contemporary understanding of the alpine region—and what this might mean for the future development of tourism in the Alps, as well as the general power of images in our minds. The number of participants is limited—online reservations take precedence.
