The illegal conscription of 130,000 Alsatians into the Wehrmacht, of whom almost a third did not return from the front, has profoundly shaped the consciousness of the Alsatians and their relationship with the new Germany. However, the wheel of history continues to turn. In 1961, General de Gaulle and Chancellor Adenauer will sign the Élysée Treaty. The father of the Strumpfmann family, Alois, is a former conscript. He struggles to communicate with his three daughters, who are focused on the future, consumer society, and Yéyé music. The mother, Anna, who listens to Schlager all day on German radio, tries her best to maintain family cohesion. But her task is not easy, as family life is constantly shaken by a new world that is undergoing a social and cultural revolution. Theater director Edzard Schoppmann stages a piece of Alsatian local and contemporary history with the play by Johann-Peter-Hebel Prize winner Pierre Kretz. A region that has been a pawn between Germany and France for centuries, with Strasbourg as its capital, becomes the cradle of a reconciled Europe. The author Pierre Kretz, born in Alsace, was awarded the Johann-Peter-Hebel Prize of the state of Baden-Württemberg in 2024. The award was presented on the occasion of the birthday of Johann Peter Hebel (1760-1826) on May 10, 2024, during the Hebel Festival in Hausen im Wiesental.
