However, in the subsequent court trial, much more is at stake than just shards. While the young Ruprecht is accused, Dorf judge Adam is conspicuously eager to cover up the case. Under the watchful eyes of his superior, an opaque game of half-truths, suspicions, and deliberate deception unfolds in the courtroom. The search for truth is increasingly overshadowed by deception. Kleist, one of the most radical authors of German Classicism, combines here the bourgeois comedy with provocative themes such as abuse of power, corruption, and sexual violence. Behind the comedic surface lies a profound drama about social structures and moral failure. In the production by Friederike Drews, the character of Eve is given a central reweighting: her monologue is placed at the beginning. Thus, the audience from the start understands what has happened to her, while the subsequent events serve as a shocking example of how little her voice counts. The perspective shifts – away from the pure court farce to an urgent confrontation with guilt and the manipulability of truth.
