Description
The young Hans Castorp travels from Hamburg to Davos to visit his sick cousin in the lung sanatorium. He plans to stay three weeks, but it turns into seven years. "Castorp's story is the story of a simple hero. He is made capable of moral, spiritual, and sensual adventures in the feverish hermetic world of the Zauberberg, adventures he would never have dreamed of before." – Thomas Mann. Mann's characters on the Zauberberg pause from real life. We see people who voluntarily and sometimes joyfully submit to the routine of sanatorium life.
And then, with a thunderclap, the First World War looms on the horizon – and society itself wonders how it could have come so far. And while it still marvels, the war catapults it from the beautiful Zauberberg into reality.
And so, the war not only consumes the protagonist Hans Castorp but also his (our?) entire epoch! A divided society, existential fears, the ghost of war... One hundred years after its first publication, Der Zauberberg is frighteningly current. Thomas Mann addresses the serious themes of his novel with humor, his characteristic irony, and unparalleled linguistic brilliance.
