After a personal tragedy, former university professor Charlie is stranded on a couch in North Idaho. His life is almost entirely isolated: his only contacts are his nurse, Mormon Edler Thomas, and recently again his ex-wife and alienated teenage daughter Ellie. That this highly acclaimed, painfully honest, provocative, and humorous piece continues to resonate long after the theater evening is due not to Charlie's extreme obesity. More crucial is the unusually empathetic view of his characters by the playwright: he depicts complex characters that touch on multiple emotional levels. In scenes of great intensity, Hunter pieces together Charlie's isolated present with the broken relationships of his past, which significantly shaped his life, like in a puzzle. Especially in encounters with his daughter, the sensitively observed dialogues unfold, in which Hunter's sense for tender as well as angry, serious as well as humorous nuances becomes evident. Charlie tries to prevent Ellie from falling into an existential downward spiral through contempt and frustration—and to feel emotionally enclosed, just as he physically is. "Der Wal" convinces with a great ensemble and a multi-layered message. This applies to all five actors, who bring each character to life and play the story around Charly so captivatingly that the following two hours pass quickly, impress, and leave some thoughts for the way home.
