The shy peasant boy Nemorino is hopelessly in love with the well-read and socially conscious landowner Adina, but he cannot confess his feelings to her. When Sergeant Belcore, a confident officer of the local military troop, courts Adina, all seems lost. In his despair, Nemorino obtains a love potion from the shady quack doctor Dulcamara – in truth, nothing but simple wine – which gives him new confidence. Misunderstandings, jealousy, and Dulcamara's business acumen cause turbulent confusion. Nemorino's daring actions impress Adina, and in the end, both realize that true love needs neither tricks nor deception. Nemorino's famous aria "Una furtiva lagrima," which unites longing and hope, remains unforgettable. With wit, charm, and touching melancholy, "The Elixir of Love" tells of longing, deception, and the power of genuine feelings. With the premiere of "L'elisir d'amore," the "Elixir of Love," GAETANO DONIZETTI (1797–1848) celebrated one of his greatest successes in Milan in 1832. The opera combines comic elements with genuine emotional depth and is considered a masterpiece between light opera and heartfelt love story.
