A disturbingly current political farce with music based on Charlie Chaplin's classic film
Dictator Hynkel rules the fictional land of Tomania and deport all non-Aryans to concentration camps, including Jewish barber Charlie, who has just won Hanna's heart. But Charlie manages to escape, as he is mistakenly thought to be Hynkel due to his mustache. He is quickly placed in the bunker in place of the barber, and Charlie must deliver a speech to the people. This is Charlie’s chance to call for resistance against tyranny and to spark hope for human dignity, freedom, and peace.
Chaplin's first talkie, "The Great Dictator" from 1940, is a biting satire of National Socialism and its fascist propaganda. In his dual role as barber Charlie and dictator Hynkel – unforgettable for the dance of the wannabe world ruler with the globe balloon and the pseudo-German "Schtonk!" monologues – Chaplin created the first Hitler caricature, never losing sight of the fate of the victims in the ghetto.
