Description
Dictator Hynkel rules the fictional country of Tomania and deports all non-Aryans to concentration camps, including the Jewish barber Charlie, who has just won Hanna's heart. But Charlie manages to escape, because thanks to his mustache he is mistakenly taken for Dictator Hynkel. The dictator is quickly locked in the bunker instead of the barber, and Charlie must deliver the dictator's speech to the people. This is Charlie's chance to call for resistance against tyranny and to spread sparks of hope for human dignity, freedom, and peace. "The Great Dictator," filmed immediately after the outbreak of World War II, was the first sound film by CHARLIE CHAPLIN (1889–1977). The legendary film to this day is a biting satire of National Socialism and its fascist propaganda. In his dual role as barber Charlie and dictator Hynkel – unforgettable is the dance of the wannabe world ruler with the globe balloon and the pseudo-German "Schtonk!" monologues – Chaplin created the first Hitler caricature and brilliantly exposed the megalomania and the perfidious personality cult of National Socialism. As a director, he never lost sight of the fate of the victims. PRODUCTION Landestheater Tübingen
