How did one of the world's most significant Giacometti collections come to Zurich? In the early 1960s, the extensive collection of Pittsburgh industrialist G. David Thompson was up for sale. Its acquisition for Switzerland sparked a heated debate about art, public funds, and cultural-political responsibility. After funding from the federal government, canton, and city failed, private donations enabled the founding of the Alberto Giacometti Foundation in 1965. The tour narrates this moving story and examines major works that still form the core of the collection today. The tour is led by art educator Astrid Näff.
