The Gas Container as a Building Type

Description

The gas container is a technical structure that in the 19th and early 20th centuries served to store locally produced coal gas for city lighting. Dr. Barbara Berger provides an overview of the history of this industrial architecture and takes us high above the mighty gas container of Schlieren with an original cover by engineer Jürg Conzett. With Urs Kloter, we visit the magnificent industrial architecture of the gasworks site. As a highlight, we experience the power and energy of the rhythmically moving Sulzer tandem compound steam engine from 1904 with the alternating current generator from Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon.
