A 58-year-old gentleman from San Francisco travels on the ship "Atlantis" for two years with his wife and daughter to the Old World. He has worked hard - or rather: let others work for him - now he wants to enjoy life. The journey from Naples goes to the island of Capri, where his fate is fulfilled in astonishing consistency… Not without reason, the story from October 1915 bears the motto from the Apocalypse: "Woe, woe, thou great city Babylon, thou mighty city!" Iwan Alexejewitsch Bunin (1870 – 1953) continues the classical Russian storytelling traditions of Turgenjew, Tolstoy, or Tschechow and was friends with Maxim Gorki, with whom he spent the winter months on Capri from 1912 to 1914. In 1933, Bunin received the Nobel Prize in Literature as the first Russian writer. However, the anti-Bolshevist living in exile in Paris was already stateless at that time. The impressive, laconic, and also uncanny story depicts with sarcastic humor the world of the rich and their subordinates on a winter sea voyage to the dream island of Capri. Daniel Fueter, who conjured up Dürrenmatt's "Durcheinandertal" last season, will lend his voice to this rediscovery, accompanied by his congenial fellow performers Vera Kappeler and Peter Conradin Zumthor. They explore the music in Iwan Bunin's story with their unmistakable sounds: on the ship, waltzes and tangos are played, also a ragtime, then a tarantella and Neapolitan canzoni in Capri.
