Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 – 1894), the creator of "Treasure Island" and the brilliant inventor of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," who lived on Samoa from 1890 until his death due to his lung tuberculosis, wrote the novella "The Bottle Imp" in Samoan language in 1891. He was subsequently called "Tusitala" (the storyteller) by the locals. Inspired by a stay in Hawaii in 1889, where he set his wondrous story of a devil's pact and great love. The dream of a happy life on an island has not lost its fascination despite global overtourism, climate crisis, and political chaos since Stevenson's times. Vera Bommer, actress and popular speaker at SRF, who last season performed in Mark Twain's "Adam and Eve" on the "Flying Carpet," will take us into this mysterious island world. The soundtrack: Hawaiian music, both traditional and modern, with singer and ukulele player Charlie Fischer, guitarist Pascal Biedermann, who conjured the world of the Mississippi for "James" in the penultimate season, and his long-time musical companion Sandra Merk on bass. They met at the now unfortunately closed "Hula Club" in Basel, a decades-long meeting place for sounds from Hawaii. Pascal Biedermann plays a Lap-Steel-Hawaii guitar, inherited from a deceased Hawaiian musician, almost like the spirit from the bottle in Robert Louis Stevenson's story… This performance is part of the series "The Flying Carpet - Eight Literary-Musical Island Journeys".
