Program: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791): Mitridate, re di Ponto, KV 87 Concert Performance The old King Mitridate wants to do it again. But he suspects that his two sons might dispute his love for his fiancée Aspasia and also the throne. Therefore, Mitridate spreads the rumor after a defeat against the Romans that he has fallen in battle. His eldest immediately pressures the young bride of the father, but she actually loves the other brother. Then the long-dead king appears again and the disasters begin to unfold. For the first of his over twenty operas, 14-year-old Mozart chooses a story that is quite intense: a drama by the French master of tragedy, Jean Baptiste Racine. With great psychological skill and unmistakable theatrical instinct, Mozart translates the extreme mental states of the characters and the emotionally heated family relationships into sparkling music. By the way, only one person dies at the end: the grim old King Mitridate. In the Age of Enlightenment, a happy ending was more interesting than the apocalypse.
