Commissioner Matthäi, who has already been transferred to Jordan and is only a few days in office, promises the girl's mother to catch the murderer. Shortly after, the only suspect confesses to the crime—somewhat involuntarily—and commits suicide. The case seems closed. Not for Matthäi. Obsessed with the idea of tracking down a serial offender, he develops a dubious plan. He takes over a gas station as a tenant and sets a trap for the unknown murderer. The young daughter of his housekeeper serves as bait.
