The Rare Orchestra sees itself as a collective - a self-organizing structure composed of twelve musicians from different genres who bring their experiences, industry knowledge, and compositions that cover the entire repertoire. These range between jazz, folk music, contemporary music, and free or guided improvisation. "Free improvisational music is for us a symbol of a society as we wish it to be," says Chili Romer. "Everyone does what they consider important and right, but with the greatest possible attention to what is happening around them, and with a maximum focus on the success of the whole." The different style categories are seen by The Rare Orchestra as a quality: differences generate inspiration, which energizes rehearsals and concerts.
