Description

The versatile troubles of a chaotic holiday father: The debut of the Safdie brothers is said to be based on their own childhood memories. Lenny (Ronald Bronstein) is a divorced father of two school-aged sons. The little time he has with the children, he tries to make up for with anarchic intensity. He wildly frolics with Sage and Frey and seems to want to create all their childhood memories at once. On the street in his New York neighborhood, he plays the fool, which often leads to arguments. A short trip to the countryside with a fleeting love affair also turns into a fiasco. Lenny's daily life, a carefully balanced obstacle course between incompatible demands, ultimately spirals out of control. By profession, Lenny is a film operator and still rents proper 35mm copies. Just as analog as shooting from the hip, the style of DADDY LONGLEGS matches the setting in gentrification-affected New York. The dialogues, arguments, and especially the strong performances of the children have an improvised power and emphasize the fine line between fun and irresponsibility. In keeping with the unconditional love that is felt throughout this film despite everything, the Safdie brothers dedicated their debut to their own father.
