Culture in Bethlehem: Christian Meditation and Discussion with Martin Jäggi

Description

Biography
Martin Jäggi, missionary of the Bethléem SMB Missionary Society, was born in 1942 in Zurich and attended primary and secondary school in Pratteln in the canton of Basel-Landschaft. Now 81 years old, he completed his secondary education in Rebstein SG and Immensee SZ in 1956, before beginning his novitiate within the Bethléem SMB Missionary Society from 1962 to 1963.
After studying philosophy and theology, he was ordained in 1970 by Bishop Anton Hänggi in Pratteln, in the canton of Basel-Landschaft. He then spent eight years in advertising in Switzerland, ten years in a slum in Lusaka, Zambia, five years in the Diocese of Malaybalay on Mindanao, and sixteen years in Bontoc-Lagawe in northern Luzon, Philippines. During sabbatical periods, he took a three-month course in apostolic spirituality at St. Beuno's in Great Britain, a spiritual accompaniment training led by Jesuits, and three months of biblical studies in Jerusalem (Dormition Abbey). Since 2018, Martin Jäggi has enjoyed his retirement and served as administrator of the parish of Küssnacht am Rigi from 2019 to 2021. The missionary first encountered yoga in 1962 at the SMB novitiate, with the book "Yoga für Christen" by Déchanet. During the silent retreat in 2012 at Monte Oliveto in Tuscany, he first came into contact with the "World Community for Christian Meditation" (WCCM), the global community for Christian meditation.
