CSI Mars

Description

The planet Mars has inspired human imagination since ancient times. While in the past there was speculation about "little green men" and a fictional radio broadcast about an attack from Mars caused panic in the USA, today researchers are searching for traces of former or perhaps even currently living microorganisms. Was Mars inhabited in its early days? Can we still find traces of these organisms today? Are manned missions to Mars necessary for this? What about the evidence of microbes still living today? Has a simple probe from the 1970s perhaps already detected life on Mars?
In this course, we will explore such and similar questions and follow how modern natural sciences, thanks to sophisticated scouts on and above Mars, as well as from Earth, try to find answers. This search for clues will culminate in the question: Does terrestrial life originate from Mars? Course leader: Dr. Hansjürg Geiger, high school teacher, private lecturer at the University of Bern
