Description

Based on a bet, two young men devise a plan to test the fidelity of their girlfriends. What follows is an uncertain game of seduction and power, where four lovers descend into a dizzying world of shifting reality, where truth becomes increasingly elusive.
Director Netia Jones, in her debut on the main stage of the Royal Opera House, transforms Mozart's comic opera through a sharp contemporary lens, where 18th-century romantic intrigues meet a deeply satirical, technologically advanced deception. The roles of the lovers will be played by exciting young singers Louise Alder, Simone McIntosh, Mingjie Lei, and Huw Montague Rendall, complemented by Gerald Finley as the manipulative architect of the game, Don Alfonso, and Emily Pogorelc as Despina. Conducted by Thomas Hengelbrock, who will highlight the beautiful melodies that underscore the provocative and modern themes at the heart of this opera. Year of production - 2027
