«Enlacez-vous, millions !» The waltz king Johann Strauss is part of the New Year’s passage like Capricorn in Grison. His rarely heard waltz Enlacez-vous, millions stands out for its lyrical beauty and elegance. The title is taken from Schiller’s Ode to Joy, which was also set to music by Ludwig van Beethoven in the final chorus of his ninth and last symphony. Just over two decades earlier, Beethoven completed his first symphony, still distinctly more classical. The influence of his musical ancestors Haydn and Mozart is as recognizable as the early innovations that laid the groundwork for his significant work. The same goes for the virtuoso concert aria Ah! Perfido, which was performed a few years earlier during Beethoven’s only major concert tour to Prague. The festive program is completed by music from Josef Strauss, a second member of the legendary Strauss dynasty of Vienna, and other sparkling works from operettas and musicals.
