PROGRAMME R. Schumann - Manfred Overture, op. 115 E. Elgar - Cello Concerto, op. 85 in E minor P. I. Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 5, op. 64 in E minor ‍ Here, three tormented figures appear. Manfred first, consumed by a guilty love — that of Astarte, his sister. He dies of pride, without seeking redemption; his last words are revealing: « Old man! ‘tis not so difficult to die ». Then comes the composer Elgar, who is overtaken by darkness and confides through his score to Maximilian Hornung's cello a whispered farewell at the edge of the unknown. Finally Tchaikovsky and his Fifth, in which a nameless character enters: Fatum, whose heavy march traverses the four movements and which the Finale desperately tries to overturn. ‍ ‍As part of the 26/27 season of the Société de Musique de La Chaux-de-Fonds. ‍ BIOGRAPHYMAXIMILIAN HORNUNG · CELLO Born in Augsburg in 1986, Maximilian Hornung has established himself as one of the most remarkable cellists on the world stage. Laureate of the prestigious ARD Competition, he counts among his mentors Anne-Sophie Mutter and David Geringas. Known for his playing with great expressive depth, he collaborates with major orchestras across Europe and America (Tonhalle Zurich, Vienna Philharmonic, London Philharmonia) under the direction of conductors like Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Esa-Pekka Salonen. Alongside a vast classical repertoire, he promotes the discovery of lesser-known masterpieces for cello, also engaging as a chamber musician and artistic director.
