Description
Once again, the Cipolla Theater from Bremen is making a guest appearance in Schaffhausen. They transform well-known works of world literature into expressive and poetic puppet theater accompanied by live music. This time, they’re presenting a story by the American author Edgar Allan Poe. “I believe the house and its surroundings are filled with a strange atmosphere.” Roderick Usher, the last scion of a degenerate noble family, asks an old college friend to keep him company. His friend arrives at the remote, dilapidated Usher House, where, alongside taciturn servants, Roderick’s terminally ill twin sister also lives. Shortly after his arrival, Lady Magdalena Usher dies and is laid out in the cellar—the prelude to increasingly eerie events. While a storm rages outside, the sleepless friends try to escape the gloomy mood with music, conversation, and art. In his short story, published in 1839, Edgar Allan Poe combines subtle horror, grotesque imagery, and poetic reflections on fear, friendship, and love beyond death.
