The Four Last Songs by Richard Strauss, composed in 1948, constitute his final major vocal work. Created after the war, they look towards the extinction of the Romantic world with a moving serenity, especially in "Im Abendrot," where time seems suspended. Christina Landshamer, a highly sought-after soprano on major European stages, brings a long breath, clear diction, and the ability to bring to life the fusion between voice and orchestra in Strauss's line. Dvořák's Othello Overture, written in 1891, opens the program in a dramatic atmosphere inspired by Shakespeare. Brahms's Symphony No. 4, premiered in 1885, concludes the journey with an exemplary rigor, whose passacaglia finale is one of the great peaks of 19th-century symphonic art.
