At the center is the moving story of a single mother who moves with her daughter to a small, sleepy village in the south of France. With courage and zest for life and a fine sense of her fellow humans' wishes, she opens a pâtisserie right on the church square – a small, lovingly designed temple for exquisite chocolate creations. But what becomes a place of enjoyment, sensuality, and encounter for some, is a nuisance for others: the devout village pastor sees this temptation as a threat to morality and order. Determined, he tries to rally the village community against the outsider and forbids any contact with her.
Thus, an entertaining conflict arises between control and tradition on one side and openness and joie de vivre on the other. With wit and emotional depth, Chocolat tells of prejudices, changes, and the sustainable power of human encounters. Even Lasse Hallström's film adaptation of the story was seen as an appeal for tolerance and became a box office hit in the early 2000s. An extraordinary ensemble brings the story to life: the charismatic acting duo Ann-Kathrin Kramer and Harald Krassnitzer bring the characters to shine with great joy and presence.
