A stage homage to Chet Baker Spring 1988. Chet Baker was actually expected in the concert hall to perform with a big band and orchestra. But then his cream-colored Alfa whispered to him where to go: seaward. In the yard of a small Baltic Sea town, between masts and buoys, he feels better taken care of; the gala performance is forgotten at that moment. The visitor attracts the attention of a young woman. He enjoys the encounter on land and on the water. Later, she will experience her first jazz concert. Neither of them suspects that this will be Chet Baker's last big performance. "We don't want to tell the same old story of drugs, fights, and downfall," says trumpeter Ingolf Burkhardt. "We mainly want to celebrate the rise, the high flight of a musical genius – musically and literarily." Author Volker Präkelt focuses especially on the ambivalence that runs through Baker's entire life: the unpredictability of a fighter paired with a gentle, ethereal side that made him so popular. His "angelic nature" gave jazz "a femininity" that was especially evident in his singing. The multimedia staging is a snapshot of a life between extremes. Baker had everything, surpassed the greatest jazz trumpeters in critics' surveys, loved, fell, and rose again. He discovered the voice as a second instrument but always missed the exit to a regulated life. Chet On The Beach impresses with an extraordinary cast: With Ingolf Burkhardt on trumpet and Ella Burkhardt on vocals, father and daughter interpret Baker's legacy in their own way. Sascha Rotermund can be seen in the title role. The production is enriched by the visual power of photos and videos by music photographer Steven Haberland. Driven by jazz classics like My Funny Valentine, an evening unfolds that celebrates the fragile beauty of an exceptional artist.
