Description

Bedřich Smetana originally envisioned a comic opera with librettist Eliška Krásnohorská. Ultimately, during the composition of his last completed opera, the composer found in the romantic text inspired by the old legend of a wall of stones built by the devil on the river near the Vyšší Brod monastery moments that gave the entire story a different meaning. Smetana's isolation in Jabkenice and his poor health and depression were reflected in the individual characters, and the comedy was replaced by the depth of their feelings. Humor did not disappear, but it intertwines with a longing for love, life wisdom, melancholy, and devilish temptation, so that the main message is a celebration of love, loyalty, and selflessness.
