Willi Derungs (conductor, Bern concert) Orff’s “Carmina Burana” is one of the most popular and frequently performed choral works. Orff and his librettist Michel Hofmann selected Latin and Middle High German texts from the medieval Codex Buranus for the composition of the 25 movements. The cantata premiered in 1937 at the opera house in Frankfurt am Main. The unbound manuscript was discovered in 1803 at the Benediktbeuren Abbey and transferred to the Munich Court Library (now the Bavarian State Library) as part of the secularization process. The first edition was edited by the Germanist and librarian Andreas Schmeller in 1847. Orff and Hofmann had access to the fourth edition from 1904. Orff discovered it by chance during Holy Week in 1934 and was immediately enthusiastic about it. The texts of the Codex Buranus were written by many unknown authors of the 12th and 13th centuries. They explore the influence of the goddess Fortuna on the course of life. She is associated with the spinning wheel of Fortuna. Good fortune and misfortune alternate ceaselessly. In this context, the first part of “Carmina Burana” is dedicated to spring and the reawakening of life in nature. In the second part, Orff and Hofmann present songs from the tavern (In Taberna).
