Brunnensingen der Sebastiani Bruderschaft Rheinfelden

Description

The Sebastiani Brotherhood was founded in 1541 during a plague epidemic in Rheinfelden and is named after the patron saint of plague victims, Saint Sebastian. At that time, it was believed that the plague was caused by water contamination and that singing to the fountains could avert the impending danger of the epidemic. Twelve men dressed in black walk with lanterns through the dark old town and stop at six fountains. At the same time, the lights go out everywhere in the town, and the alleys and squares are shrouded in medieval darkness.

The start is at the fountain in Fröschweid (corner of Tempelgasse-Fröschweid).
