Description

At a festival where the universal instrument piano is at the center, neither Bach nor jazz may be missing. Brad Mehldau brings both together in his recital at Le Piano Symphonique. The pianist and composer is one of the defining jazz pianists of the present. The closeness of Bach's music to jazz has often been described. Brad Mehldau approaches it not as a style quote, but as an attitude: about form, counterpoint, freedom, and the art of opening whole worlds with few lines. With the Fourteen Reveries, Mehldau consciously turned to shorter, concentrated forms. The Reveries are daydreams that lead out of the banality of everyday life or can soar into melancholy. The piano becomes an instrument of memory, suspension, and poetic condensation. On behalf of Le Piano Symphonique, a new work, The Fifteenth Reverie, is created and premiered in Lucerne. With this, Mehldau continues the idea of the Reveries for the festival. The second act shows another side of this artist with excerpts from the album Song Books. Brad Mehldau has also translated songs by bands like the Beatles, Nirvana, or Radiohead into his own jazz idiom. Here, pop culture, improvisation, and pianistic sophistication meet – opening the festival to a sound space between Bach, jazz, and song. WORLD PREMIERE
