by Kahlo Iizuka (Japan) In 1960s Japan, during a period of economic growth, a moral purge policy develops, leading to severe repression against sex workers. Thanks to a law that only applies to "women," transgender prostitutes, referred to at the time as "blue boys," find themselves in a legal loophole that displeases the police. When the police indict a surgeon performing sex changes, a memorable trial begins.
Based on the archives of the real trial, the film pays tribute to a fundamental chapter in the history of trans rights. Set in chic locations, with vibrant pop outfits and an expressive soundtrack, the director (who is trans, as is the entire cast) takes us on a narrative of struggle and courage. All presented in the tone of a provocative, tender, and unforgettable dramedy.
