Description
After the death of his wife, Richard lives isolated in a strictly guarded gated community. He dismissed his longtime housekeeper without any apparent reason. Now he holds his only daughter Helen responsible for taking care of him, as he becomes increasingly in need of care. There was a long silence between father and daughter, as more separates them than connects them. Richard neither respects Helen's idealistic professional view as a lawyer nor the choice of her husband, a Black intellectual. Helen, in turn, accuses her father of avoiding the challenges of a changing society, where questions of gender justice and racism are consciously considered. During one of the daughter's brief visits, the electric shutters suddenly close automatically – as planned in case of a robbery. Father and daughter are forced to endure together.
"How should we live together?" asks the most performed Dutch playwright Lot Vekemans in her new play, hitting the nerve of the times. She shows in a very human way the seemingly irreconcilable attitudes that cause dissent and conflict in many families and circles of friends.
