Wind Octets

Description

The term Harmoniemusik today refers to an orchestra with a mixed ensemble of woodwinds, brass, and percussionists. However, already in the 18th century, the eponymous predecessor enjoyed great popularity, albeit in a significantly smaller sextet formation with two oboes, bassoons, and horns each. In 1782, Emperor Joseph II founded the Imperial-Royal Harmony and supplemented it with two clarinets. The ensemble was considerably cheaper than an orchestra and could still be used in large halls and outdoor activities. It is therefore not surprising that Joseph II soon found imitators at numerous noble courts, including the Bonn court of the Cologne Elector Max Franz. For his Harmoniemusik, Ludwig van Beethoven wrote the Octet in E-flat major shortly before his second trip to Vienna in 1792. Like Mozart's Wind Serenade No. 12, it breaks the framework intended for Harmoniemusik of table music, which could be played in the background during banquets, receptions, and evening entertainments. Rather, themes, sound, and instrumental treatment aim at a symphonic effect. So be excited about the symphonic sound of the wind players of the Musikkollegium Winterthur – and feel free to postpone your Sunday banquet to the time after the concert.
