Description

Born in Sweden and based in Switzerland since 1996, Meyer's music effortlessly crosses stylistic boundaries and takes the electric bass far beyond its usual terrain. Awarded the Swiss Music Prize (2019) and the Bern Canton Music Prize (2018), Björn Meyer continues to redefine the voice of the electric bass—across cultures, genres, and traditions. His solo activities have taken him to festivals and concert halls worldwide, from Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie and Ronnie Scott’s in London to Istanbul, Yokohama, Tehran, and beyond. Besides his solo career, Meyer is active in various musical genres. He has collaborated for many years with Tunisian oud master Anouar Brahem and has shaped contemporary Swedish folk music with the trio Bazar Blå for three decades. With "Convergence" (2026), his second solo album on ECM, he continues the musical work begun with his groundbreaking debut "Provenance" (2017). Produced by Manfred Eicher, these recordings explore the rarely heard potential of the bass guitar—they create distinctive sound colors and finely nuanced textures, while consciously incorporating the acoustic space in which the sounds are created. Meyer describes this as a "second member" of his solo performances.
